Scenic Maine Helicopter Flights and Scenic Tours
There is simply no substitute for the aerial perspective from a helicopter (see our testimonial section). Have you always wanted to fly? Well now is your chance! A scenic helicopter flight with Point of View Helicopter Services is a treat no matter which season. Maine has the largest contiguous block of undeveloped forestland east of the Mississippi with a bit under 90% of the state covered in trees. Many of these are hardwoods and come the autumn, our fall foliage glows every color imaginable.
In the summer, most of Maine’s landscape shines in varying shades of green, whether miles of forest or acres of farmland. If weather permits, maybe we’ll fly with a door off and you’ll feel the breeze and smell the smells from below. Perhaps you are an organized sports fan so maybe we can glimpse or photograph your favorite event from above. Maybe your pleasures run to the backcountry, in which case perhaps some route finding or reconnaissance for a hiking trip in the hills or mountains will be our objective for the helicopter flight?
The spring is a good time to view the ground before trees leaf out and winter flying is a treat with Maine’s snow pack and varied ice conditions to view and photograph from above. One of our favorite things about helicopter flights are the amazing patterns in nature we see from this vantage point and any season can be great for this.
Our famous jagged coastline and generally rugged terrain statewide have provided Maine with an abundance and diversity of wetlands unequalled in the Northeastern United States. Fully 25 percent of Maine's land area is wetlands, four times the wetland area of the other five New England States combined. Seeing the contrast between land and water throughout the state is a treat. Beaver dams and huts are usually visible and if we are lucky, perhaps we’ll spot a moose, some deer or maybe even a sandhill crane. If you want to see eagle nests, great blue heron rookeries (heronries) and other wildlife and natural features, we can make this happen. If man-made structures like dams, shipyards, bridges or historical features pique your interest, we can plan your helicopter tour accordingly.
Over five million acres of Maine's wetlands are freshwater types (wooded swamps, shrub swamps, bogs, freshwater meadows, freshwater marshes and floodplains). Only 157,500 acres are tidal types (tidal flats, salt marsh, brackish marsh, aquatic beds, beach bars and reefs). This brings us to one of the most popular attractions, the Maine coast!
Maine has just under 3,500 miles of coastline and virtually all of it can be explored by helicopter. Our scenic helicopter tour can take us over a huge variety of topography along the coast including rocky peninsulas, sand beaches, coves and rivers and of course the bold coast downeast. There’s probably no better way to see the coast than by letting Point of View Helicopter Services take you island hopping over some of Maine’s 4,600 islands. Casco Bay, the Kennebec River and Muscongus Bay are all different and all within easy reach of our base at the Auburn-Lewiston airport (KLEW).
Maine has about 65 lighthouses on the open coast and our rivers. These are all unique and all reachable by our helicopter. Maine even has the only inland lake light east of the Mississippi River and it’s on the National Historic Register. Most lighthouses have an iconic quality to them and an aerial perspective provides a wonderful “taste of Maine.”
Let’s not forget our home, Merrymeeting Bay, a freshwater tidal inland delta formed by the junction of six rivers and draining nearly 40% of Maine and part of New Hampshire. The Bay is unique in the entire world and is known for its bald eagle populations, spawning and nursery habitat for the 12 migratory fish species inhabiting the Gulf of Maine, a dozen rare plants living in the intertidal zone, endangered and threatened species including two types of sturgeon and Atlantic salmon and of course our waterfowl, with Merrymeeting Bay being the largest fall staging area for migratory waterfowl north of Chesapeake Bay.
Over the years our satisfied passengers have ranged in age from in-utero to their late 90’s and from able bodied to held together with a variety of metal and plastic hardware. If we can get you in the helicopter, you will have a great flight! If you are one of the few not interested in a flight with Point of View Helicopter Services, please consider giving a scenic helicopter flight or helicopter tour to someone special in your life. Celebrate them! If you are a business owner, consider a scenic helicopter flight or helicopter tour as an employee reward for a job well done. Or, maybe use it as a raffle opportunity to bring in new business.
Helicopter flights, particularly over Maine’s beautiful and ever-changing terrain, never go out of style. Purchase a Point of View Helicopter Services Gift Certificate today!
Testimonials
"It was fantastic!!! Like flying on the magic carpet. As a kid I would imagine how it would be to fly and SEE all the wonderful things. I would dream of flying...!
This flight was an event of a lifetime...for me...The number of Bald Eagles was great. One has to develop the vision of the white and dark conformation to see them quickly. The beauty of The Sands...one cannot comprehend with words...only sight...
I commented to Cindy that sightseeing by air would be something visitors might like. Her answer was that tourists like things more dramatic...volcanoes etc. But maybe on second thought, we need to keep these spots guarded and hidden from entrepreneurs and developers.
Best of wishes for future flying! The trip you provided for me of the Kennebec River and our farmstead was fantastic!! To see the land and place the history of two hundred + years ago was something I wish all could experience. Not just something in a movie or TV. To see the nooks and crannies that we cannot access by truck or boat is the greatest.
Thank you very much."
"What a wonderful time we had yesterday. Another truly memorable experience to cap our weekend. The photos are stunning. As soon as we got up in the air yesterday I regretted not bringing my camera, but then thought , maybe for a first time up it's good to just be collecting many, many mental pictures.
Mark was so thrilled that he and his kids got to experience such an event. He was also really blown away by your generousness to take us all up...
Thank you for all the memories, the gift of flight, and all you do regularly to keep Bowdoinham and Merrymeeting Bay the glorious haven it is."
"It was very generous of you to let my brother Kai and I take a ride in your helicopter with you. I liked how you showed us all the switches and how you let us land on the water. The view was beautiful. I have always wanted to fly up into the sky like a bird and you gave me that chance. At first it was scary, but once you explained everything to us I felt more comfortable. You are very good at flying the helicopter.
THANK YOU!"
"I don't know how you would ever find anyone any more delighted with a helicopter ride than Ron was last Thursday! He enjoyed it so very much!
Thank you so much for your patience and help getting him in and out of the helicopter. All of his major joints are metal, plus the loss of a leg---so he has quite a time doing what he'd like to do.
Also---thanks for the pictures! You were more than generous in all you did for us.
Best of luck to you in your helicopter business."
